Educate me on an Aussie locker.

After a less than ideal experience in the woods last week, I think I need to invest in a minor upgrade for my Jeep. I'm looking at a locker for the front axle, but I like to know how things work before I put them on. Taking an Aussie locker for an example, how do they work? In 2wd, is it totally disconnected so there is no additional drag on the Jeep? I'm not looking for brand recommendations right now. Just wanting to know how things operate.
 

If you have the stock front axle and your vacuum axle disconnect works, even the automatic lockers should be transparent to you on the street...
 
I ran them in my stock axles front and rear and in 2wd the front isn't noticable except in parking lots making sharp turns, then you get a clicking noise from it ratcheting.
