I have a YJ in need of a bit more power. I have been a GM guy car wise and have a host of SBC engines and parts so I would like to go teh GM route for repowering the YJ. Doe sit make sense to go with a full GM drive train? I will ahve to upgrade the axles to handle to power. A full GM power train would allow me to drop in the motor trans and transfer case in and have the drive shaft to the fornt diff on the correct side. Does this make sense and are there any tank traps I shoudl watch out for doing a swap like this?

Welcome to the Z. Dropping in the entire drivetrain is an excellent idea, it saves a lot of money on buying adapters. May even work to buy the donor vehicle so you have the computer and wiring harness as well.

unless the truck has a 14 bolt FF and D60, the 1/2 ton chevy axles are not any better than a stock jeep axle.

depending on what your using the jeep for here is what I would do.

trail jeep- 1 ton axles
street jeep- 9" rear out of a mustang or cougar or 8.8 from explorer, leave the front alone. re-use your NP231.
