im going to full size Dana 44s in my 82 CJ 7, and then Doing SOA the axles are out of a FSJ Cherokee in the early 80s.

I would like some insite into this project cost and what i need for the Hi Steer. this is all for now i have the rest figured out i think. Just not the Hi Steer.

Thanks FiC

im not sure what hi steer means but from the set up that i have seen for the high steer the wagoneer dana 44's are som what similar to high steer. maybe a couple of spacars that are machined from steel and it could be a little higher. if you couls explain what hi steer really means maybe i can find u some info..

You'll either need the inserts to reverse the taper on the steering arms (to run stock steering linkage) or drill the steering arms out straight for heim joints to bolt on.

Have you considered using D44's from a Scout? They are a tad wider than early 80's SJ D44's and use the same lug pattern as the CJ.

Rear D44 with a centered diff would be tough to find on an early 80's SJ, most are HDAMC20 axles or offset D44's. The D44 rear with a centered diff wasn't common until late 80's early 90's.

I already have the axles couldnt pass up the offer my friend was purging his collection of parts he had left so i picked up the Danas for 200 bucks. such a steal so this is what i have and this is what i want to run. HI Steer from what i know is essentially moving the linkage and stuff up above the springs, much like the linkage is now stock it is above the springs. and when you go to SOA then thats what you have to do.

First heim joints are not legal for on-road driving. Check with your local laws.
The best hi-steer kit so far looks like poision spiders hi-steer kit.

Basically you want to mount the draglink and tierod on top of the steering arms, where it was mounted below before. The steering arms are tapered, so you'll need tapered inserts like these:

you drill the knuckle out to 3/4" and tack weld the insert in place

There are some companies out there that are making high-steer brackets, maybe check www.mountainoffroad.com .

Yet another game, but this is sooooo addicting.

The steering arms bolt to the knuckle? I believe it's high steer if the steering linkage is bolted to the top of the steering arms.

yea the steering arms are bolted to the top. i guess thats high steer then, what does that actually do other than keep the linkages away from rocks? does it provide better steering? handling?

Re: Getting to know your peers
