Homemade Snorkle Ideas ???

ok heres my idea take a say 4" piece of 2.5" exhaust pipe cut a hole in the firewall slip the pipe through half and half put a few tack welds around then seal with RTV clamp some black plastic hose 2.5"-3" diameter from part of the existing intake to the exhaust pipe clamp and seal ... then run more black plastic from the otherside in the cabin maybe down the side of the bucket to the back roll bar and attach a cone air filter ??? any thoughts on this

Yes, it'll be very loud anywhere inside the cab. Have you considered mounting it in the cowl underneath the cowl vent? Still have a little noise inside the jeep but not as bad.

www.Pirate4x4.com has a page where it shows you how they did it. But I wouldn't do the whole, dryer aluminum tubing stuff, I got a friend whose about to make me one and all for less then 25 dollars. its pretty looking too

actually have never considered under the cowl nor the noise in cab either... what i've got so far is 8 foot of 3" alluminum flex tube and 4 foot of 3" plastic intake tube *just in case* i plan on spray'n the alluminum for a not so flashy look ... thanks for the link what is your buddy planning on doing ?? in cab ? or is he going full on outside snorkle ?? i'm trying to avoid wacking up my fender thanks guys

He went on the outside, he didn't do any wacking of the fenders at all, just went straight from the box to the outside, and then straight back up the door and it sits there. Looks real nice, if I can get some pictures of mine i'll show you it by the end of the week or next week.

Wait let me correct myself -.-...Yea you'll have to drill a 3 inch hole in the side of it, but if your crafty you can probally find a way without drilling into the fender.

I don't understand how that snorkel in your link works. It looks as if the snorkle is attached to the airbox. If this is the case then how is water sealed out of the airbox. Water could still come into the airbox wherever it normally does. Does it block off the normal route?

He blocked off the stock hole where it used to suck air in. He then put a short PVC peice in the side to draw air in. He has a cap he can cap off (inside the airbox) either the snorkel for street driving or really rainy weather, or he can move the cap to the new intake hole in the box to seal it so it draws air through the snorkel.



It was in JP magazine a little over 10 years ago. He had the issue in the glove box. In the 10 yeas that have passed the mods he had went from being considered a heavily modded Jeep to being a run-of-the-mill DD/weekend warrior.

in one magizine i was reading awhile back they were talking about how 33's used to be considered an extreme size for tires and now 35's + are commonplace .. so interesting how hobbies grow

Ok, what you do is build a small slip block to slip in front of the air box where the original hole is. Now they do make snorkles that will enter that front hole but its easier and cheaper to go through the side and just as efficent. You take out the block when you driving down the road and put it back in when your off roading, on road you can get more air flow to burn gas better, and off road enough air to burn the gas.

Shhhhhhh! 33's are still an extreme size for some of us so don't burst our self-delusional bubbles. I'm thinking about modifying my airbox with something along the lines of tc's link. No snorkle but pvc coming out on the right side and block off the original intake hole with a drop in k&N filter. That way it'll stay above the fender to protect from splashing mud and water but still open up the box and won't have to worry about water gettin pushed in from the front if i do get into any water. See any problems with that? And what size pvc tubing should i use? maybe 2.5 or 3 inch pipe?

How about an even-up swap for mine? It's got 31's, a mild suspension lift, and open diffs. It'll be the challenge you are looking for.

I realize you may have spent a few more dollars on yours, but think of the exitement factor:!:

Ok umm, honestly, im still going to do the whole drilling the hole into the side of my jeep. I want the snorkle to sit higher then my dashboard, just incase I get into water thats like up past the fenders, but I am still riding on a stock level, so no lift for another month or two unless I can get that free two inch lift from my friend. *ponders while scratching his hairy chin*
