If you had $500............

Chrome Lots of chrome..... tail light guards. Hood Scoop. Maybe some goodyear eagle tires !
And a loud horn to blow when Iam driving at the mall..

Is your Jeep currently stock? What year/model.

I would say a lift if it is not already done. THen I would go for lockers (but I would personally weld the rear end)

Here is as short as I can give it on my Jeep.. I have lifted it 4", weber carb, radiator, steering box, 4.88 front and rear, all new wiring, 31" tires, TFI upgrade, all new knobs and dash switches, new clutch, new starter, new bellhousing, high lift jack, new fuel pump, new water pump, gps, new fuel tank, new rear crossmember, all new gauges including speed cluster..
looking at putting donar dana 44's,, or electric fan,,, maybe some 3 point seat belts,, we mostly just creek hop and mud a bit,, no real tuff stuff,,,

my friend just locked his cherokee with lockrites, front and rear for $230 each

A CJ? You need to get 1 piece rear axles first, then the locker. You can do this for $500 if you do the work yourself. Or for $500, you could go to the 'yard and find a better axle than the 20.

$.02

To tell you the truth, I'd probably go out and buy lots of beer and throw that into the jeep. Then go to the beach or go camping somewhere, get real drunk, then decide how to spend it.

The 20 is about as strong as a dana 44 if it has the one piece axles and an axle truss.

Well since you didnt ask what I would do to your jeep for $500. I'll tell you what I would do to mine. Full roll cage, cause the CJ roll bars suck.

If you've swapped to 4.88 gears, I'll assume you've already spun a hub and upgraded axle shafts? If not I'd do the shafts and build a truss. A Lockright locker works well in an AMC M20, the carrier is plenty durable.

You could upgrade the front D30 to Superior brand inner and outer shafts made to use the 297X joint for around $500

Some 33" mud tires would make that 4.88 gearing alot more useable with that low revving 258.

Maybe a couple of tanks of gasand a well stocked cooler some good company and head out for your favorite trail for the week end! Summer is burning away and it will be to cold to enjoy them over night trips before you know it. Cause it sounds like you rig is trail ready and you can use what ever is left over from the 500 bucks to fix what you break while out and about this week end! tug

Well the article started out as IF YOU HAD 500$... now has turned in to I have 500$ spend it for me.. lol
personaly I would buy my greenie welder but that is me personaly.
if I was you...take a "T" bill buy some food and gas and go see where you can get stuck at...once your stuck you should learn/know what you will need to get un-stuck/ not stuck the next time.
You dont need us to tell you what to buy...

I've got a new tire purchase coming up but that's a necessity, so other than that I'd spend it on a tire/hi-lift jack carrier & bumpers.

I don't know what to tell YOU to spend it on, but if I had 500 bones to spend on MY Jeep, I'd get a Painless harness and a steering column that isn't all jacked up!

well, I would get some new seats, the old cj low back seats and an electice fan... just becuase I have wanted those for a while and will most likely be the next thing I do, after I buy a cheap car for my DD....after that I want headers, high flow cat and exhaust.....but that is much later and alot more than 500
