Is it my clutch of my transmision???

So when I shift from 2nd to 3rd I'm almost always grinding unless I really take my time let the Jeep idle down and then shift. Happens going 1st to 2nd sometime as well as almost always downshifting. Is it my clutch of transmision??? Think of putting in a centerforce II, any thoughts on that?

Thanks,
Tom

sorry that should be "Is it my clutch OR my transmission"... had a couple tonight.

Sounds like bad synchronizers in the transmission. You can put in a synthetic gear oil in the transmission and it may help for a while.

A performance clutch doesn't help much on a stock jeep drivetrain.

What about with steep gears? Does that change things enough where a performance clutch would be a benefit? Does the shifting problem call for a complete rebuild? Thinking of dropping in a T5 for overdrive. Current transmission is a T4. I know it's not any stronger but I need something that bolts in and I don't need to change my Tom Woods driveshafts. Thoughts?

Thanks again,
Tom

One of the benefit from using a performance clutch is for a positive engagement. It holds up better on a high torque situation where the engine horespower and the traction keeps it from slipping.. Bounty_Hunter has the right idea with the shifting concern. I recently changed my trans. fluid thinking i still had some MT-90 in my garage. Instead , i ended up using a multi-weight oil for now till the shippment of mt-90 gets here. I noticed a significant change on gear engagement when shifting especially fron neutral to 1st on a stop light, its hard to engage in gear.

X2; I also noticed a BIG improvement when I dropped MT90 in mine. Also, I dont even know how the clutch works on the CJ, but on my YJ, I had some hard shifting, and the cause whas that the master/slave cylinders of the clutch where out of commission. New ones and they worked just fine!

Where do I get this magic juice MT-90? Curious of hearing more about the maste cycinder for a clutch... CJs have that?

It depend on the engine you are running or plan to run in the future. If you are running a 6 then you should have no problem, but if you plan on upgrading to a v-8 I would stick with what you have.

I pulled my t-5 out (still have it if you are interested) and replaced it with a t176, which holds up great behind a 5.0 H.O. and has the ford butterfly pattern. :D

I bought mine online; dont remember which store, but I think Summit Racing has it...

I cannot tell you if CJ's have it, but I would guess the clutch is also of hydraulic operation, and if it is, there is a master cylinder somewhere near the firewall (close to the pedal), and there should be a slave cylinder in the transmission; I know some early YJ's had the slave internally and are thus a PITA to remove (you have to drop the transmission), but later models (like mine) have the slave externally, which means they are a quick change (about 15~30 minutes).

You know whats helped a lot.... new clutch linkage/z bar. My other one was toast. Still need to replace the fluids... how many quarts does a t4 and dana 300 hold anyway??

Thansk,
Tom
