Alright this last summer i was riding in my TJ with the top off and the doors off. And i see the wonderful blue, and red lights in my rear view!
I got a warning for 2 things
:x :x :x :x
1) My Off-road lights were not covered with a non trasparent material

2) My DOOOOOORS ! (Major BS)

i was nice to the officer and he said that i had to have doors on and then read me this line

"The doors shall open and close securely" Code 175.77 (f)

However he forgot to read the exception to the rule

(f) Doors. A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with doors of a type used as original equipment. The doors shall open and close securely unless the vehicle has been manufactured or modified to the extent that there is no roof or side.

And this makes me think that my jeep (TJ) should beable to not have doors?!?

I have 3 Questions

1) Am I right with the door thing ?

2) Mirrors i have a rear view mirror and that all i should need?

3) I want to take my spare tire off bracket off in the back and is that legal?

P.S. i know he was right about the off-roading light being covered i just got lazy

Thanks

I am pretty sure you can take the doors off. Most states require 2 mirrors. you can have a left and rear view (as long as the rear view is not blocked by anything) or 2 side mirror. You can pick up mirrors that fit into your door hinge or you can get relocation brackets. You don't need a spare to be legal. many full sized trucks do not have spare tires with them.

He's got you on the light thing but the door ticket is ridiculous. You can remove the spare mount, but where are you gonna put the spare? It might be legal, but Murphy's Law will make you regret not having it.

Here is something anyone can use..
Say " Was it your wife at the bar last nite ? Hey look she came on to me. And now your harrasingme about it. I guess I have to file a harrasment complaint against you officer." This will get him to steer clear of you, Or you will be calling your mom for bail. But I have seen it work.

Ive talked to an officer and she said that i only need one mirror ex: rear view

code 175.68 (b)

(b) Rearview mirrors. A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with at least one rearview mirror or similar device which provides the driver an unobstructed view of the highway to the rear of the vehicle for a distance of not less than 200 feet. A mirror may not be cracked, broken or discolored.

I say, take it to court IF he pulls you over again and gives you a ticket. He will be repremanded and will learn a leason. However you could get that jerk judge that tries to make an example of you so I would be sure to have all the codes IN HAND if you get a ticket.

I'm not justifying an officer being nitpicky with his Jeep, but If I were a police officer (which I'm not) and someone tried to pull a stunt like that on me, the harrasment complaint would become an excessive force complaint very quickly. Might as well make it worth it  .

i get stuff like that all the time... i was once pulled over for "obstruction of view" for an air freshener hanging from my rearview (at least that was their excuse)... i never get tickets... they just want to see if i'm driving drunk

Like Snitty said, I have been pulled over only to drive away with a warning on several occaisions. Many times when an officer sees you're not a drunk or a jerk, he'll cut you some slack. That's why I wouldn't advise the "wife" trick.

lookin to get a jeep near pensacola flordia

Well, if they(police) say, you smell like you've been drinking, return that with, "Gee officer, your eyes look glazed, have you been eating doughnuts?" Never tried it, but I think it would be funny as hell to see someone do it.

more times than not... there is no slack to be given... they have no real reason to pull me over in the first place

I've seen this discussed in many forums, and this is how I see it: If this statement is PA law, then technically, officers can ticket you for no doors. All model TJs ship with doors included. You can't buy a brand new Jeep TJ(at least not from a liscenced dealership) without doors. However, a lot of the CJ models, CJ-5s and CJ-7s I believe, actually did not all come equiped with doors from the factory. So for them, doors weren't original equipment, so they could get off by saying their jeep never came with doors. I don't want to be a let down :( but thats just from what I've come to understand. Though you could probably get away with those "safari doors" that are for TJs. I was thinking of buying a pair of those to "beat the system" :D

I wouldn't worry about it until I was actually ticketed. Lots of loop holes in the wording of the law, especially if you own a rig with a hard top that you have modified by removing it, however, most likely you could argure that your soft top was a roof as well via Websters Dictionary that states that a roof when not relating to a building is "4 : something suggesting a roof: as a : a canopy of leaves and branches b : the top over the passenger section of a vehicle". Most of the time the cops don't bother to show up at court for small peanut citations anyway.

unless the vehicle has been manufactured or modified to the extent that there is no roof or side.

if you remove your top, you have modified the vehicle so that it has no roof or sides... AND it was manufactured with no permanent top or sides

Exactly, most politicians have the technical writing abilities of a 10 yr old (reasoning abilities too most of the time), they couldn't write a tight document to save their lives. That's why there are so many rich lawyers, most laws are presented in the form of a loophole

of course they are... so the people writing them, and their buddies, can get out of stuff
