Rear Brakes Leaking

Couple months ago I had the rear brake shoes and hardware replaced by a garage cause I didn't have the time to do it. They didn't replace the brake cylender cause they said they were still good. I had to take it back the next day to get one replaced, it wasn't good.
They replaced it for nothing.
Then, a couple months later the other side is leaking (spewing fluid all over the tire) The level was not very low, so I kept driving it for another 2 weeks and the leaking stopped. Now, about 2 weeks after the one side stopped leaking, the other side is leaking that they originally replaced the cylender on. The rearend is a D44 out of an 89 XJ and was totally rebuilt when I put it in the jeep. What the heck is with this thing? I am running big tires but geez... and the inconsistancy is very puzzling.

any ideas? or should I just upgrade to disks in the rear?

where exactly is it leaking?

Big tire's shouldn't cause it...heck, I've got 44's on my stock 1-ton drums in the rear!!

RE: Sporatic vibration

Maybe a reamer and a rebuild kit for the cylinders?? I know they aren't too tough, because I've done it before (long time ago).

I bought new cylinders for my CJ a few months back... They were about 10 bucks apiece. Not worth the trouble of actually rebuilding the cylinders in my opinion, just just my 2 cents. Sorry, can't help you on why they are going bad though. Let us know if you figure it out!

RE: There is a new gal in town!

Yeah, I don't rebuild the cylinders, I would rather have new which is what I have been doing. But I just would like to get more than 2 months out of them! Maybe I just got a bad one or something, which means I should just bring it back to the place and have them do it over.

Hey 88, what size shoes are on your one ton? The D44 I got just happened to have a larger set than most, 2.5" wide shoe rather than 1.5 or whatever the stock width is.

I meant a hone, not a reamer, but yeah, you're probably better off just going with new.............no idea why the new ones would leak.

Well, I can't exactly remember what size the shoes are  . They are the BIG FF14bolt brakes though...and the outside diameter of the drums are 15".

I was just saying I don't think large tires would cause a leak/break like that. It wears out the drums and shoes faster, but that's about it.

I'll try to search around to see what size they are though. I'm guessing they wouldn't fit in D44 drums though, considering the diameter on yours would be much smaller, probably.

Just curious 88, you don't have to go looking up stuff for me. If I were to change anything over it would be to disks of course, I should look that up. Thanks guys.
