Rear differential kit

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 Limited 4.7L. The rear differential axle needs to be removed, a new one installed, and overhauled. Is this something I would be able to do myself at home, or would I need to take it in to a mechanic?

What's going on with the rear differential? Let us know what's failed and we can give a better answer. The reason I say this is that some items inside the diff aren't too hard to service (i.e. replace the axle), but others are difficult (i.e. replace pinion gear).

Those rear axles are notorious for needing new bearings due to developing a loud howl. Better to take it to a shop unless you have a bearing puller and press.
