hey everyone. my girlfriend has a 92 xj with a 4.0 and an auto transmission. the rear main seal is leaking pretty bad. am i going to have to drop the transmission to replace it? what all is involved? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

It can be done by pulling the oil pan. There is a writeup on the web somewhere.

thanks. im on vacation and the darn thing just started pouring oil out. i did it at a friends shop and it was heck getting that top part out. i had to drop the crankshaft down a bit just to get it out but its done and im happy its overwith. thanks again.

Oh, the top part you can push out with a small screwdriver... push on one end and the other end will come out, then pull it out the rest of the way with pliers.

she had 170000 miles on her. the top part was just baked in there. it wouldnt come out with just the screwdriver. i even had a friend turning the crank shaft as i pushed on the seal. its done now though, thanks
