I'm doing some research around product eveolution. I can't help but look at the Jeep as a wonderful case study. This product has endured the test of time because it has evolved over the years. I think any product development group should look at this fact and learn that evolution of products is very important.

My question is...When does a jeep stay a jeep and not cross over into the SUV market? What are the characteristics that make it still exciting and not over the top?

4 seatbelts but only 2 comfortable seats

When you turn a truck into a stationwagon thats when you have an SUV

Heated seats, , backrest tv's, dvd players and a 4 wheel drive system that breaks everytime you take it off road

strait axles and the ability to climb a sheer rock face in stock form is what makes a Jeep a Jeep. as soon as thay start getting IFS and leather seats is when it turns into an SUV

RE: H3 Bulbs

It was built to help win wars. Since then it has served as a farmhand, mail truck, police vehicle, camping vehicle, racer, cruiser, offroader......it's just the most versatile vehicle in the world.
It doesn't matter what you call it. By todays standards, maybe it is better classified as a SUV. Who cares? It's the best damn SUV ever built, and it lives up to the SPORT/UTILITY part of SUV better than any other ever could.

Enzo Ferrari once said that the Jeep is Americas only real sports car. Patton credited it with being one of the biggest contributors to us winning that war. It's been bought and sold several times by several very different companies, yet the original spirit of the Jeep has, for the most part, stayed true. It's THE American vehicle, and it has never let us down.

Plus, chicks dig them.

The things that set a Jeep apart from the SUV's out there are solid axles (not independant suspensions), removeable doors, a fold-down windsheild, rollbars, a real transfer case with low range and a manual shifter (not a switch on the dash), and the availablility of a stripped down model with bare steel floors. Not to mention the fact that...

You can take them out and run them up hills, over the rocks, across the creeks, through the mud and then hose them off inside and out after driving them home on the highway. The short wheelbased, narrow Jeeps will fit down trails cut by ATV's. With complete confidence I have taken an un-modified Wranger (it was a '92) to work during a blizzard, passing everything from cars to full size trucks that were abandonded on the sides of the highways. What else can you all do that with? Nuttin ;)

With exception of a very few trucks, it is the last truly rugged 4WD. Ford had the early Bronco. International had the Scout. There were other rugged, capable on/off-road vehicles but they are all merely a memory and only Jeeps have stood the test of time.

I am of course, referring to the CJ's and Wranglers... with the newly re-designed Grand Cherokee, the Liberty, and now the Commander having an independant front suspension and luxury styling the Wrangler is the last Jeep not designed for the Soccer Mom :(

Oh, and what keeps it from being over the top? Look at a Hummer H2. That defines over the top. It's the anti-Jeep. Leather, DVD, dual-zone climate control... people PLEASE... that ain't no offroad toy, it's a status symbol bling mobile.

So, Jeepsearcher, are you ready to buy a Jeep yet?
