running lean

Very white plugs, at the electrode are an indicator. But most of the newer Jeeps run somewhat lean anyway. If the ends of the electrode on the plug seems to be a little melted or the edges dulled, on a fresh plug, it´s time to take a serious look.

A wheels on dyno tester, and an exhaust ananlyzer are really the only way to know for sure. Unless you take the head off and inspect the valves for rounded edges or burn pits in the piston. My local muffler shop has a Dyno and a typical test costs about $35.

Lean usually occures during prolonged high speed driving, high RPM for extended periods. If the plugs burn white at idle, this can also be an indicator of problems. Most motors will burn a little richer (light grey at idle). In my Chiltons there is a page of color photographs showing various plug conditions.[addsig]
