TJ Stuck in Park, Won't Start

On my 2000 TJ, I have had no problems. Yesterday after riding around, when I went to start up, there was a slight effort to start, more of a buzz, then nothing. Next, I found that the shift lever was stuck in park, the button to shift wouldn't push in. I charged the battery to full charge and I got a longer louder buzz, but no effort to turn over the engine. I need help. Could the starter pinion be jammed in start position and would that lock it up? Appreciate any advice.

It's okay, I got it fixed. Apparently when the battery goes (and it went fast), not only will the Jeep not start, but there must be an interlock that keeps you from depressing the button and moving the shifter out of the park position. Seems like a bad idea, since you can't even move it to push the vehicle out of the way. A new battery is installed and it cranked and drove like a champ.

Do you have to push the brake in to release it out of park?

If you do and the battery is dead it may not be reading that the button is pushed in.

Easy way to move it is to shift your transfer case to neutral.I think all have 2hi,4hi,N,4low.

Putting it in neutral should free up all wheels.
