Upgrade parts on transmission?

Hey. My transmission died on me yesterday. If I get it rebuilt is there any internal parts I should have upgraded while it's all apart?

Ya, I guess that would help. It's a 93 YJ 4.0L standard. I'm not sure what model transmission it has.

If it's a manual, then you have an AX-15. It's a decent 5spd. I don't know much about upgrading the internals, though.

Best upgrade you could do is convert it to an external clutch slave using parts from a '94+ AX15.

Second best upgrade would be using Redline MT90 for fluid.

Make sure all the synchronizers are replaced during the rebuild

Is it an AX15? Then yes, most definately. Not sure about the NV trannies.

I'm not sure, I'll have to check. If I remember correctly, the last time I tried to look it up in the manual I couldn't find what they specified.

The transmission guy my buddy contracts all his transmission work out to swears by the GM synchromesh fluid. He told me to use it in my transmission when it started grinding in second and reverse. I've been using it for 2 years now and haven't had a problem with it grinding since the day I started using it.

Well considering it's unlikely GM actually manufactures their own product, I'd bet it's Pennzoil in a Goodwrench bottle.

What year is your TJ?

Mine is an 04 and nothing on the window sticker or related paperwork tells me what kind of transmission it is. Just a 5 speed manual HD. Who knows where the owners manual is.

Maybe a NV3550 if it's a 4.0L and a NV1550 if it's the 2.4L (not 100% sure). Not a TJ buff.

The GM Synchromesh is good for the AisinWarner trannies (ax5 and ax15), just as the Penzoil Synchromesh. Not as good as Redline MT90 since the Redline is a full synthetic.
