Wider stance, which flares and how to do it?

I have 31" tires on my 99 TJ, and it looks nice but I'd like to widen the stance a bit.

If I got the pocket 6" flares (just as an example, please recommend good ones), how do I get the tires out further...spacers aren't a great idea I imagine.

Does having the wider stance affect anything in a negative way?

there are no good pocket flares. every pair of bush wacker flares I have seen completely detonate at just the sites of a twig. they are very ridgid and have absolutly no give. If you jeep is really only street and maybe very lite trail riding where body to obsticle contact is not going to happen, then they should be fine. Flares that large though might be a little over kill. try sourcing a set of rubi or sahara flares, they are a little larger than stock tj flares and in my opinion look good, plus they are way cheaper.

running a wheel and tire combo that is very wide (less then 3.5" of backspace) can put unwanted stress and cause premature failure in the unit bearings, that is really the only major thing. Some might argue that the paint will take a beating cause your tires will kick up pebbles and road debris into you paint, but I wouldn't really worry about it.

Thanks for the heads up on the flares. I was thinking i'd like to keep my tires, just widen out their stance. Would spacers be the only thing to do that?

You can run spacers, but they will cause added stress to axle bearings. They will also affect your turning radius and your scrub radius.

Ok, so different rims or axles...what are my options for axles, what do others do for rims? I don't want wider tires, just to have them out a bit further from the body.
