I own a YJ, but a friend of mine is having trouble with his XJ...

At idle, it will overheat quickly, within a matter of seconds...

But if you keep it above 2000rpms, it works fine.. engine stays cool..

So i'm thinkin water pump but i want to know if anyone has seen/experienced this before...

What year XJ? The XJ's came with two different types of cooling systems, open and closed, depending on year.

XJ's are plagued with cooling problems and are sometimes tough to track down. Has he done anything to the cooling system lately?

Centerforce Clutch or Not?

Allright I just went through this w/my 91

Replace the expansion tank cap before you try anything else. Its a $6 item from the dealer only and if its defective and not holding pressure, your vehicle will overheat almost immediately.

If its not that then start thinking about fanclutch elec fan water pump radiator

Amen to kcash's post, my 1990 started the same thing and ended up being the pressure tank cap, don't waste time looking at the parts stores either, most don't carry them, go to the dealership, mine was $11.
