Gas tank shroud

Hey, guys. I found yet another something on my Jeep that needs fixed...
It turns out my gas tank shroud is toast. In fact, I think toast would be stronger than my gas tank shroud.

If I make a shroud, or skid plate, rather, would it have to completely encompass the tank like the old one, or could I just make one that covers the bottom and bends up on the sides a ways?

I'm thinking 3/16in. steel with the sides open. The sides would have a 90 to 120 degree 2 in. or so wide piece welded on to keep the tank from sliding sideways.

What do you gentlemen think?

It would be a lot of messing around, but I've been doing 5 months of messing around on this menacing Jeep... I miss my Jeep...

Sounds like a plan. i think it would be better than the factory.. just a suggestion, run a 1/2" angle iron front to back on the bottom of the skid plate and weld it on. this will give it more ridgidity if you hit that skid plate on the rocks.
