AMC 20 / small brakes

I have always had model 20's with the 11x2 brake drum. I got an old cj-5 last year just for the axles and was about to put them on my jeep when I saw that they had the smaller brake drum's. Should I (or could I ) pull the axles out and swap the smaller backing plate for the bigger one and use all my good brake stuff, or should I just go with the smaller brakes and order 2 new drums and all new brakes?

i have the smaller brakes in my cj-7 and they work fine for me and i run a sbc in mine with 38.5's

I was there a couple years ago. I went with the small ones because they were already on the axle. I also upgraded the front to the "matching" disk brakes, not. They didn't balance right, too much front not enough rear. So without playing with the proportioning valve or other hydrolics I just put the 11" on the back that worked perfectly.

I guess you just have to try it.
