RE: hi_c is back... with problems

we have discussed this before but....I need some input.
Since the "tax man cometh" in a few weeks I will have some money to spend trying to straighten my TJ's problem out.

My Tj keeps "fouling" the O2 sensors (turning the CIL on :( )causing it to run rich and is actually robbing me of power. I have replaced both O2's 4 times! (I have even taken them out and cleaned them with carb cleaner) It will straighten out and the new ones will last 2-4 weeks then back to the same ol stuff. I have replaced plugs (sooted up bad) and wires, new airfilter, completely re-did the exhaust system, sent numberous can of injector cleaner down its throat...all to no avail.

Have had it hooked up to a puter and the codes were O2 sensors. But something has got to be making them go. One of the techs I took it to once suggested it might be the on-board computer not processing data correctly.......

I'm just tired of spending money going in circles

Thanks Guys (in advance) :D

So what exactly did you do to the exhaust when you replaced it?

Have you replaced the TPS and CPS? What about the MAP sensor? All of these will determine how rich the engine runs.

I would think they would throw a code if something was wrong with them, but it's worth a look.

Hey Thanks..I did some checking on-line and can score a MAP sensor for $105 ($36 if it had been a YJ...go figure). And a TPS for $25.
The CPS I checked on and the 2.5L doesn't have one...according to AUTOZONE anyway.....and they did not list one here either:

Thanks Bounty!

Confusing.....

No other codes at all? Any smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Nope(codes) smoke? well yeah you can see a puff when you shift sometimes...not always. (while following) When it sits and idles it covers the ground with black soot out of the tailpipe but you can not see any smoke at that time. (should have seen it when it snowed!)

The 97 TJ with 2.5 does have a CPS. I got one at Carquest for about $50. I have an old one that should still be good as it didn't fix my problem when I replaced it. Make offer.

RE: Re: Cherokee purchase, what model is best?

Yes, it's got a CPS, it's on the top of the bellhousing towards the driver's side, behind and below the intake manifold. It has a harness connection on top of the intake manifold, closest to the firewall.

I'd check for a vacuum leak or a bad MAP Sensor.

chop off
