I noticed the other day that my front axle when engaged is acting funny. I had my jeep on a fairly steep hill with some flex in the axles and I had it in 4 low. the back wheels would spin and the front left was not (I'm not sure if the front right was spinning) but the front left was shaking back and forth as if I was turning the wheel but I wasn't. Any idea as to what was happening and if I need to take the front axle out and look at it?

It sounds like you've got an open differential, which is stock on a YJ. I'd bet that your right wheel was spinning, and possibly grabbing partially (which is what would make the left seem to jump).
This is the reason alot of guys run lockers that will lock both the left and right wheels together and force them to spin at the same time.
