92 4.0 Exhaust Manifold Stainless Replacement?

Okay,
So I am new to Jeeps, and looking forward to it!!!
However, my 150K mi. 4.0 needs a new manifold. In research I have found NOTHING available at U-pull its, and refuse to pay the $550 for a new one!

I did find a Stainless Steel replacement online for $130, can anyone advise on why I SHOULDN't put a stainless in? Are there drawbacks or is it an acceptable replacement?

Your advice is greatly appreciated and always welcome!

The reason you can't find any in a junk yard is that they ALL crack. I say give the SS a try......you can buy 4 stainless to 1 cast. If it doesn't work you're really not out a heck of alot. That's my $.02.

Yeah 4.0 exhaust manifolds are garbage. I would put a stainless one in that way you do it ONCE and never have to worry about it again. There are other manifolds out there that claim to have "flex" points in the tubing, I wouldn't trust those either. I will be buying a Banks SS manifold as soon as I find one cheap. They go for 400 bucks! Who makes this one that you found for 130? That sounds very reasonable to me for a SS manifold. I would jump at it, if it is good quality that is.

So there is no heat problems with stainless?
It almost seems to good to be true, who would waste $$ on the cast then?
So no bad experience going stainless from anyone?
The one I found is on 1AAuto.com, just punch "stainless jeep manifold" into yahoo search, pops right up!

I certainly appreciate the advise fellas!

From a Vet to you all, thank you

I would see what kind of warrantee is on the Stainless... Banks has a lifetime guarantee on thier stainless manifold.

I just checked out that website. That manifold does have a lifetime warranty. Looks like a good deal, but what's up with those "flex points"? I'd probably try one for that kind of bargain and the warranty.

AC issues continued...

Seems like a pretty good deal huh?
I haven't checked out Banks yet, they manufacture with flex points too correct?
Appreciate your help with this!

RE: windshield - self or shop?

:? The "flex points" are BS. It can't flex there because the other end of the tube is welded to the same rigid flange that the other primary tubes are......and if it could, what would be the point? That thing might work, but it will be just as restrictive as the factory unit. Probably more restrictive with those flexy thingamajigs. They are there only to serve as a reducer for attaching the smaller primary tube to the larger diameter "log" part of the manifold. They look interesting but they will restrict flow and invite problems with heat concentration. A good mild steel header is going to cost more than that thing, SS headers are ALOT more money.....but still cheaper than a crappy factory replacement.

Banks DO NOT have those stupid flex points. Just like junkpile said they are useless and it doesn't even make sense. I talked to a guy at meineke muffler about the jeep 4.0 manifolds and he said that most of them crack down by the collector, just like mine is. He said he welds them up and puts em back in. Not a good idea either in my opinion.

RE: Why did I loose all of my posts?

Beantown where are you located? I am in Rhode Island and have an 88 Cherokee that I rebuilt the engine 1 1/2 ago with new manifold for sale cheap.

RE: how do I get rid of springwrap

This is the one I bought new off of Ebay last november and installed.

Note, it does not have the flex points of which I was very weary about.
I don't think the flex pipe joints will hold up and would not waste time with them. The job is not a really easy one to tackle and you want to put the best one on you can afford. For me, this was the one. For you, maybe the Banks is the one. If I had the extra $$, maybe that is what I would have gone with.

Job tip#1. Do not undo the fuel lines from the fuel rail. Leave them intack and hold the whole thing back with a wire tie. If you do, like I did, it will cost you about $30 from the dealer for the little plastic kits to re-install.
Learn from my mistake.
