A/C Compressor Problem

Hot foot

So the other day when i was driving home i noticed a grinding sound. When i popped the hood i located it to the A/C compressor. With the A/c turned on it spins fine but will start to make a whining/grinding sound. With the A/C turned off, it will be fine and then all the sudden it tries to start spinning again. I've been told this means that the compressor is in the process of locking up. Is there a simpler solution to fixing this than replacing the compressor? Is it possible to just get a shorter belt and bypass the unit all together?

btw, its a 94 6cyl. cherokee.

thanks in advance.

RE: Hot foot

i would think you could. maybe find a belt for a non ac cherokee, or you'll just have to experiment. but then you wont have A/c

RE: We made it to Mass now need parts

does the a/c work well? if not it may simply need a recharge. Low coolant will cause it to rattle too. You can unplug the wire to the compressor and this will disable the clutch.
