and now... Clutch.

Well on top of my transmission going bad, my clutch is on it's last legs... no, it has no legs left. On the way home from the gym today my clutch pedal dropped, and I was powershifting my way home. I did notice that if I pumped the pedal it would come back up for a while, and here is where my question comes in.

What kind of clutch does my 91 YJ have? Is there some sort of master cylinder for the clutch too? One thing I have never worked on is a clutch, but I do know that my dads 93 has a thing to put fluid in... those kind are called hydrolic right? And the kind without is mechanical, right? Bear with me, it's time to learn about my jeep yet again. Any help would be... helpful.

Thanks
Joop

You've got a hydraulic clutch system real similar to the '93. I'd check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder, it either needs filled or replaced since you can pump up the clutch to work a little.

'94 was the first year of the external clutch slave.

FYI '93 is kinda the ******* child of YJ clutches, it's different from '92- and '94+.

Well mine is a 91... so its an internal slave?
Yes, it's internal. A good friend of mine had issues with his '92. He added fluid once a week for almost 2 years until he needed a new clutch. He wanted to get all he could out of the old one before replacing it.

Maybe adding clutch fluid will suffice for a while???

Well, Joopin, I'm no help here...........but it sounds like you're gonna know a WHOLE lot about your Jeep before this is all over..........and that's definitely a GOOD thing!! Good luck!

So how exactly do I put fluid into an INTERNAL slave? I will be replacing the clutch, and throwout bearing when I swap the transmission out... but hopefully I can add fluid before I go that internal.

There should be a clutch fluid reservior on the firewall. It's been a while but I think on the driver's side?

If the slave is just leaking and your fluid is really low it may work. If it is thge clutch master cylinder then that's another story.

Is the clutch fluid low?

Just found this info...
1991-1995 models, the cluitch master cylinder is a sealed unit which must be serviced by replacement only. ~Chiltons

My friend's was a '92 4 cyl... but I would think the 4.0L had a reservior too. There's none?

Yes, they all have resevoirs that you can add fluid to.

By sealed unit and requiring service by replacement, they're likely referring to being able to rebuild the clutch master cylinder.

Yah, mine has der reservoir. It been good, yah. I been talkin' like dis fer 'bout 'n are now.
