Check engine

I have a 99 TJ check engine light came on today. How do I get the codes?

I tried turning the key in and off 3 times no code.

I also tried holding in the trip reset and turning the key in and off 3 times. That did a test speedo and tach was moving all over and gave me all the same numbers on the screen but did not give me any codes at the end.

After I did this reset now it's idling high.
Other than that seems to be running like normal.

most auto part stores - advance, auto zone, orielys etc will do free scans,
the key trick - on off is convenient BUT wil not show all codes s a scan is always advised.

Google " jeep engine code you tube" a tutorial may help in the future.

A tip - codes NEVER say a part is bad. Just where to look.

Yeah I was trying to avoid the stores they always seem to try and tell me a part needs replaced. Might be time to buy my own scanner.

let them scan then post the codes here someone will advise ...

the parts selling is why they do free scans - just be aware

Unfortunately the key trick does not work on 99. You have to go to AZ or O'Reilly's... The one near near lends it to me to use in the parking lot. There is only one guy there that insists on hooking up himself so I amuse him and let him do it.

Get them read, write them down then have them clear them. In some cases the CEL is set but nothing is wrong or it was temporary.
If the CEL comes back in a week there is an issue to look into.
