I noticed some noise coming from the front of the engine today and narrowed it down the the power steering pump. When I press on the face of the pulley as it is running the noise goes away. The pulley shaft has a little "in and out" play in it; not much, but a little.
Has anyone here rebuilt their pump? There are kits for about 12 bucks, compared to $65 new pumps. How tough is it? Is it worth the trouble?
How soon do I need to take care of this? Is this the kind of thing that will fail catastrophically, or just get louder and start leaking? (The V belt that drives the steering pump also drives the water pump, so if the pulley falls off, the water pump won't be turning either, and I'd like to keep that from happening!)
Poking around in that area I realized that there's a little wobble in the water pump too... Are remans ok, or should I buy a new one?
