So, we're headin' home from Strain's music store, I shift into 3rd and all of a sudden I feel the clutch pedal tappin' at my ankle. I go to shift into 4th and, "WHOA!!!", no clutch!! I tell Mrs. Mud "we have no clutch", she panics, and we "3rd gear-it" to the closest pull off (got to practice my "no clutch" downshifting!!). I left 'er runnin' and looked up under the dash. There was my clutch pedal dangling in the breeze along with my "clutch position sensor switch" (or the CPSS as the service manual calls it - gotta love those acronyms!!). I looked on the floorboard and found a plastic washer-looking thing and a rubber washer. I reassembled as best I could reckon, stuffed the rod back in the master cylinder, and we went on home. About a half an hour later, I had to leave to get some firewood. Lo and behold, Lucille would not start. I crawled under the dash, disassembled the pedal stuff, and tried a couple different combinations with the washers until finally she started. My question(s):
1) Is there something up under there that's supposed to keep the pedal from "over-unclutching" - comin' back to far and thus pulling the rod out of the master cylinder?
2) Have I incurred any damage to my master cylinder (no detectable leaks)?
3) Will I stick to automatics from now on? (NOT!!!!)
I was thinking of fastening some wire, string, or a spring to the pedal assembly to keep this from happening again  . Everything seems to be working alright.
Wadda ya' think??
