Emmissions for a V8ed CJ

Does anybody know what the emmissions were for a 1976 CJ with a 304? mine had a 360, but it's pretty much the same engine.... I have to get mine ready for Texas. Would I have to put cadalydic converters on my exhaust? What is an ERG? What will I need? It has not had to pass emmissions before. I know I have plans for a trail rig and with rising gas prices why on god's green earth would I want to drive that gas hog....... I dunno :? , the same reason I bought it, I don't look cool in a car...... "Only in a Jeep" ( for all the girls of Jeepz who don't think/know I'm an idiot) I came across some pictures I took of it when it was new to me..... and it's like re-discovering a loved one...... hold on, I'm getting all "vaclempt" in-side, talk amongist your selves.... I really did cry when I saw those pictures. I had bought the Jeep MOMENTS before meeting my future wife (who was on the same roll of film as a friend) well after 3 years I have gotten to know how the Jeep runs but my wife is still a mystery and the Jeep doesn't make me sleep on the couch (she told me to do that once, the next day she found me in my Jeep  )

RE: Well, the bastids finally did it....

hehehehe...... something that old you should be able to get passed... you may have to go w/the cats at a minimum but the rest should be able to get by w/a good tune up, fresh gas, lean out the carb and make sure its good and warmed up... or you can do what a lot of folks here in vegas do... find someone who wants a few extra bucks ($100 here will pass ANYTHING if you know the right person/people...) unless the smog checks are done in state run facilities there... (here most are done in what looks like recycled "fotomats" (remember those?!?!?!?!) -either way... g'luck and BTW... EGR = exhaust gas recirculation if memory serves... more smog stuff... okay... i'm babbling now...

RE: CB/PA install

again... reaching back in the memory now... (didnt research) - want to say the EGR circulates some exh. gas back into the intake - here's a link i found (google search) http://autorepair.about.com/od/generalinfo/l/bldef165.htm

you should be able to make the call... if its the same there as here in Vegas, most smog stations here have a "no pass-no pay" policy - or will retest you for free...

OK what about an Oxygen Sensor? Did 1976 Jeeps have 'em? Are Cat's standard for '76? Do Vacume lines have to he hooked up? I have NO idea about what emmissions look like or whay year they started..... can you list what a '76-'77 had as far as emmissions and what would make me fail? It's got headers on it Holley 650cfm carb.... i think?

Given a little time if need-be, I could locate our 1977CJ technical manual that we got from American Motors with the Jeep. It's very inclusive and a good 1" thick. Will look for it today Prariepunk LBR

Thankyou LBR.... as you guys can see, I'm also trying to improve performance........ I might actually opt for a 4.0 Litre

I'm not sure there were any emissions devices on a 76 except for the catalytic converter and EGR. If they check for things like this, the fact that it's not a factory engine will be easy to spot.....the displacement is cast right into the side of the block on AMC V8s.

I thought yours was a 79?

Well part of it is, but the main block is a '77. Will the 304 EGR fit my 360? They should be almost a exact match (engines) 304ci-401ci 1969-1991 or roughly around those numbers, right?

RE: Re: RE: Vent and 4x4 light do not work.

should be able to go to the TX DMV website and find out

Finally talked to a buddy in a lube center (with a nice '93 Bronc' on 37"s) and he said "WHAT YEAR?!?, man your jeep don't need $h!t! All you need is mufflers and tail pipes..... and pass inspection." cool, she'll be running soon (I keep saying that, huh?)
