Gas tank Swap

My fuel gauge has never worked on my 80 CJ 5 and finally I got tired of that. The reaserch I found said it was likley the fuel sending unit. I took the tank off to replace the fuel sending unit and found a bunch of pin holes in my tank. Back to the store for a new tank. I went with the same 15 gal capacity in steel.

My question is on the 2 lines on the opposite side of the tank from the fill.

Does it matter if the lines are on the correct bung?

I hooked everything back up and put 5 gallons in and I am not getting any fuel to the filter. I have replaced everything in the fuel system except the lines and fuel pump.

Everything but the gauge was working before I took it apart.

Any ideas?

I think one is a return and one is a pick-up. Try swapping the lines!

is your pump in tank you may have a broken wire or forgot to connect it
I do that a lot these days old age setting in

Wondering, what do you have for a motor?

a factory 1980 CJ should not have an intank pump, and it should not have a return line. you most likely switched the tank vent and the supply line.

It is a 258 straight 6 with a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. There were 2 fuel lines that hooked to the fuel sending unit and 1 for the fill 1 for the vent by the fill and 2 on the opposite side. Think one may be for a charcol filter but am not sure. The 2 extra lines are plastic where they come into the tank with short pieces of rubber fuel line to connect them to the tank.

I am going to install a new fuel pump this weekend and see if that helps. As far as I can tell the current fuel pump is stock.

This has nothing to do with anything other than my own curiosity, but when you were putting in your username, did you mean SHINY instead of shinny? I couldn't help it. I have to ask.
