MY AX-15 IS GOING OUT AND I WANT AN AUTO

1991 yj 6cyl d-30 fr 8.8 rr
ax-15 np231 with sye(i would like to keep this t-case) if possible.

im rebuilding the 6cyl so im not going to a v-8. im building this to be the perfect daily driver and moderate trail rig...i want to drive it to moab, run upper helldorado, and drive it back...

money is an issue or i would just go to advance adapters, i want to try to piece it together off e-bay or locally...

which auto will most match what i now have and what additional item will i need, i.e master cyl, computer, coolers??

thanks...

I NEED A PROJECT AUTO TRANNY FOR MY YJ..INSAYN?

Go with the AW4 from an XJ, it's nearly indestructable and has the OD 4th gear which many Wrangler owners upgrade to from the 3spd auto.

I've got one for sale, and could ship it to you for $200 +shipping. I haven't had much luck selling to an XJ owner because they simply don't wear out.

It's longer than the AX15, and you'll need a new 231 input shaft or machine the one you have to fit the AW4. 231 also will need clocked up a bit, hangs lower in the XJ. There are many web writeups if you do a search.

Well, to minimize adapters, your choices would be the Jeep TH400, 727, 999 or AW4. All will bolt to your engine. I'm sure the Th400 will need a transfer case adapter, not sure on the others. Look at Novak Adapters or JB Conversions web sites. There is good info on adapters and spline counts there.
I have a Th400 that needs a rebuild if you want the most heavy duty one available. To use it, you would be talking:
$100 for my transmission
$400 for the Novak Adapter and tailshaft
$400 for rebuild
$100 for new torque converter.
You will also need a flex plate (flywheel), shifter, driveshaft work and possibly modification to your skid pan mounts.
Definitely not cheap, but a bomb proof transmission.

AW4 needs nothing other than:
Changing/modifying the 231 input shaft
Clock the 231 to raise the front output
Change driveshaft lengths (likely with any transmission swap)
Install a TCU (transmission puter) and interface it with the ECU.

I've also got the AW4 TCU that I'd throw in. Let me know if you have any questions after searching the web on this upgrade.

How about a new radiator with provisions for cooler lines?

i did the swap. really easy. I billybobbed the input shaft with a chop-saw and made a template for drilling and clocking. the hardest part was fabbing up a mount, but its still easy. I also made spacers for mounting the t-case shifter in its original place. After all was said and done, rear shaft needed to be shortened, and front lengthened. Transmission shifter will have to be taken care of. if i were you, id just use the floor shifter since you already have the hole for it. im a little anal, so i rigged it up to my factory column shift after fabbing up a new bracket cuz i lost the original one. I have a shifter for it and the cable too, if you decide to go aw4

this may be the route i take i will run it by my mechanic.. thanx

mechanic might not be willing to do it b/c it involves some fab work. maybe if you take it to an offroad shop, they'd be able to help you out a little better, if you're looking to pay to have it done.
