need transmission info

I have a 93 yj, 4.0L I6. It has the 3 speed automatic transmission, but I'd like to replace it with a 4 speed trans. Can I even do this? If so what type of trans could I use? I read somewhere (can't remember where) that my options are somewhat limited because of the configuration of the bell housing, but I'm not very knowledgable in this area so any help would be great, thanks

if you need transmission info, you should call Eddie Murphy, he's an expert.. Sorry couldn't resist.

you can put in a 4 spd or 5 spd. I believe jp mag swapped in a 700R4 into a TJ, but there were a couple one off parts used and the adapters are pretty expensive. One option that might be alittle more cost effective would be to swap in a 5 spd or 6 spd manual. getting junkyard parts like pedal ass. should be pretty cheap for a 94.

You can swap in an AW4, it's a computer controlled 4spd found in most Cherokees. Here's some info.

A friend of mine has a GM 4spd auto, I think it's a 4L60E or 700r4, not sure, but it's got the adapter for the 4.0L and the adapter to bolt to your transfer case or atlas. freshly built transmission for a little over $1000, the adapters alone cost close to that. for sale in St. Louis.
