At least I can flip the hardtop for a quick profit... not that I want to do that at all but it might have to happen
 
The driveshaft has to turn if a tire is turning... It's disengaged at the t-case on the TJ's... The axle & driveshaft are connected
 

SO.... I lucked out (finding the silver lining) & only have to get the transfer case... & a brake line... & the speed sensor plug... everything else is alright... I'll still need to do both hub bearings but that's another post :D
The transfer case had cracked & lost ALL oil at some point then just couldn't handle it anymore. I'm not sure when it cracked but when I did brakes, I checked it & the fluid was clean & full... & there was never any puddles under it when parked... That's where I'm at as of right now. I'd have taken pictures but the guy who has it never called me to do the teardown & just called me 5 mins ago to give me a parts list (he's a heck of a guy)
 
So here is a pic from the old transfer case... Extensive damage... Got a new(ish) np231 w/32,000 mi on it for $450... The EXACT one that came on the Jeep...
It ripped up my fuel lines pretty bad... SHOULD I GO OEM OR AFTER MARKET FOR FUEL LINES?

get new hard lines and fuel injection grade rubber lines. you can get it all at the local place or the dealership, up to you on that part
 
all mine always had red fluid that looked like trans fluid. but, wait till a person who has swapped theirs answers, ha ha ha

I was expecting to see more chain then that,I have never had one apart. Does any one know of a link I can go to to see an exploded schematic view of one.
 
Yes ATF +3or4 goes in the transfer.

And you guys are both right about the drive shaft....
On a Yj, once the pass side axle is disengaged the spider gears spin the pass side axle backwards while the drive side tire moves forwards. But the gear oil causes enough friction to spin the drive shaft just at a slower speed. And yes if you tied or taped it up some how it would hold the drive shaft still.
On a Tj both axles are 1 piece and the drive shaft always turns the same speed as the rear drive shaft...

the Jeep is on the road once again... but with only 2wd capabilities :cry: I tweaked my front drive shaft when it started thrashing around... The CV joint can be salvaged but the drive shaft needs welded or modified.
