Rear shudder & klunk

Hey gang,
I appreciate all the response on the exhaust manifold questions I had!

Now to the next project.........
I had a petty bad klunking coming from the left rear drum on braking under 30mph, simple fix I thought, replaced the 2 rear drums as they were to gone to machined, hell, one even had a bit of a lip. (i was stoked, thought I got out of that one easy!!)

Now, with two new drums, I was getting a new vibration added to the old klunk. Easy I thought, new drums, materials just getting to know one another (after I had the new drums machined to be sure they were proper) I thought it would subside afer 50-100 miles. Nope.

So now I know I have nice clean new drums, tons of pad, and a rumble and thump upon braking.

Should I be looking more at suspension or drive tran?Its a 92 xj, 154K
I am going to jack it up again tomorrow and spec torque every nut on the chasis, maybe its a free fix!!

So, if you have happened to have the same sequence of events, please let me know where you found the cause!!
 

Hi,

Have you inspected all of the components in the drum to ensure all the springs and such asre in place? It could be that the shoes aren't retracting properly...

I did tear it all apart & reinspected it this weekend. I think I am looking at an axle issues. Any words of encouragement? Been there yet?
 
Check the teeth on the ring and pinion gears. Then check to see that the drum brake assemblies are put together and operating correctly. Sounds like one of the shoes may be a little off or something of that nature.
 

Did that lip bend any hardware when you pulled it off?

I'm still thinking it is brake related, as you say it only occurs during brakeing. You could argue that it is actually happening when the Jeep is slowing down (quickly?), as thus has nothing to do with the brakes, but the only way I can think to test that theory would be downshifting into a lower gear quickly to slow down, instead of using the brakes. Of course I'm assuming you have a manual transmission?

Unfortunately not, its an automatic.
I did try using the parking brake and came up with the same shudder.
I did not think to downshift to avoid using the brakes, I am heading outside right now to try that!
So bad teeth on the ring & pinion could be a cause of vibration?
I did not think to equate the two?
See the bad part is I was yelled at in the parking lot of the condos I live in for replacing bushings last week........ I can only imagine if I was to rip out the rear axle!! So I am limited on diagnosing this stuff without bringing it to a shop.
I appreciate your input though!
 

tell those jerks at your condo that this is what you do for a hobby as opposed to enforcing neighborhood restrictions! ARRGGHh! Cant stand that attitude.

what about your wheel cylinders? are they original, they're a cheap fix ...maybe one side is sticking?
 
hi m8 I have had the same thing ? did you check the leading edge on each shoe ? they should have a leading edge if not get a file and file the leading edge on each one that should stop it. some times its not done.

Hi, another experience similar to yours.
Had a 92 XJ. Purchased it one year new in 93 with 30,000 hiway miles. Saw it when it came into the dealers as the previous owner was trading on a 93 model. I picked it up for a song, and also had the opportunity to chat with him. Only problem he ever had was a leak at each front door wind wing. Solved that with rubber tape and never opened the wind wings again.
As a precaution I took the XJ to my favorite brake and front end mechanic in Richmond, VA. I had him align the wheels and replace all of the brake shoes and pads, machine or replace any drums/disks. My mistake was to have him use sintered linings on the rears. Not good for the little XJ. Had clunking and grinding noises. Took it to my favorite shade tree mechanic and he and I looked at the linings. They were breaking apart. Seems like the Jeep didn't like the hard linings. Replaced them with OEM type linigs, never had the problem again. Just sold the little bugger last summer with 235,000 miles and going strong. Hope this might help.
