Stereo question

This is not at all a 4 wheeling question: My (stock) 2001 XJ Sport stereo has absolutely no bass. Obviously, I'm looking to upgrade to a better sound system. Would I be better off just hooking up an amp, or should I replace the whole stereo? I'm looking to do this on a budget and this is definitely NOT a show car.

The factory stereos are very week. I believe they are like <10 watts per channel. The first step would be upgrading the head unit. Granted the factory speakers arent going to give you great bass anyways but its what I would start with. If your still not happy then an amp and box is the next way to go.

RE: Lift Ideas?

x2 on the head unit. you wouldnt be able to hook an amp up to the factory unit anyways. if you want bass, but want to save room, you could try to just get some nicer speakers. spend some coin on some nice boston acoustic ($200+) front speakers, and then you can leave the rears or go cheaper (-$100) in the back just to fill sound. otherwise you can do the amp sub routine, but trust me, losing trunk space sucks, i sold mine.

ive said it once and ill say it again. go ARC. thay have some sweet component speakers that have a 5.25 mid and a 1" silk dome tweeter, with an external crossover. if your interested you can check them out at http://www.arcaudio.com/arc-05/speakers.htm trust me! you will not be disapointed. i cant remember do the new body style XJs have the mids in the doors and the tweets in the dash.

You very well can. Most don't know it, but that is what the high inputs on many amps are for

that is true. schoche(sp?) also makes an adapter that takes your normal speaker leads coming out the back of the radio and turns them into RCA jacks.

In an XJ you can hide an amp and you might even get flat subs. I forget who makes them but they are square and only like 4 inches deep (no huge magnet!). I amsure you can find a place to hide that and not lose a ton of trunk space.

RE: How to fit a big block into a YJ?

my setup:
-JVC Head unit
-4x Sony X-Plod 5.25" speakers
-Clarion Amp (under back seat)
-2x MTX Truck boxes

Sounds crystal clear, bumps nice n hard, and if i need to fold down the back seat the truck boxes are just a bungie cord away.

The sound in the YJ was OK. When we put the XM Radio Sony Receiver in, it wasn't. We ended up putting a "Bazooka sub-woofer" a sound bar and replaced the dash speakers with new ones. Much improved now! (Especially with the hard top on) - (hehehe).
