Swapping frame and Tub... Need advice...

Hi,
I am about to purchase a YJ frame, tub and a pair of dana 44s as a package ( $1300!! )

I need the tub and frame as I have no rear shock mount, and my rear shackle is about to fall off.. And the tub, although it looks nice, it needs a floor and left ricker, as weel as other rusty bubbles fixed. So after inquiring about body patchwork, it would be cheaper for the new tub!

The axles were just there, so I figure since Im gonna have it apart and I got a good deal on 'em, I would snag em!

So on to the reason I am calling on you guys!

I need advice on how to tackle this. Im doing it all myself, I hope to have it done in a month, working Sundays, and about 4-5 hras M-thurs....

I cannot seem to find a book on whaat to do first, so any help you guys got would be great.

BTW, Ill be selling the tub seen in my member pics, as well as the frame and other parts I dont know about yet.... Dana 30 & 35...

I might also be selling the brand new ( April 2005 ) Cragars "Soft 8s" seen in the pics too (Im going to be needing 6 lug rims for the Dana 44s) Ill be getting the same ones in the Dana 44 bolt pattern.

I just did the same with my CJ. Took me from new years day until today to get it more or less done, but I didn't work on it every day.
I don't really know where to start on how to attack the project. I took everything apart slowly, taking notes where needed to aid my memory. If you have a digital camera, use that too. Once you get it all apart, then go in reverse! Do as much as you can with the body off the frame.

I started my Willys about 6 weeks ago. Just start with the windshield, roll bars, front clip, all the stuff in your tub, it will all fall into place.

BESURE to have a good supply of plastic freezer bags so you can label small parts and related screws, you'll have plenty. I used masking tape on wire ends and labeled them.

Good time to clean and paint you frame, axles, and drive line........might as well make it look good. Also under your tub. I used Rust Encapsulator form www.eastwoodco.com , they have really nice paints and prep stuff.

Hell Ya! took my 41 plymouth apart back in 96, and have been building it back up as a frame off restoration slash hot rod and Looking though the baggies (what we call them) of parts with masking tape lables is a lot easier than looking trough a box of parts! (my 65 HD electra glide was bough in as a box of un-labled parts, and it sucked to put together!

Started officially dismantling it sunday night. It has gone much faster that I thought. I began by taking out the seats, console, heater box, dash, then made my way to the hood, wiring harness, then the fenders, steering column, powerboster and master cyld as one unit, slave cyld, then the pedals, E brake assy, transmission cover, anything connexted throught the tub from the engine or frame, and just removed the body mounts, the tub is loose now except for the gastank filler. Didnt want to mess with that in case I couldnt get it sealed up. Im not gonna be seperating the tub from frame for a week or so.

Everything above from the moment I drove it in Sunday night at 7 til tonight 9pm finished only took 6 hrs a night x 4 nights! To me its a hell of alot faster than I planned. It is probably due in part to the fact that I bought air tools Sunday afternoon before embarking on this.

After spending 20 minutes cranking a 9/16ths wrench 1/4 turn at a time with my right foot, I said to myself "Hell with this, Ill be here til Christmas taking apart this rust bucket!!" It was the right front corner bolt holding the seat to the frame. All four were that tough. After applying my new air ratchet to it, it came off in 10 seconds! THe fenders took 20 minutes for both. I am amazed that anyone woud have the patience to do a project like this by hand. Some bolts -the bottom bolt holding the fenders to the tub - each side - took forever even with the air tool. I cant imagine what a pain in the arse it would be to get that booger out by hand. Theres no room for leverage! Unless you drilled a hole through the inner fenderwell and used an extension and a breaker bar...

On a side note my boss asked me why I was doing all this... Why not just sell the Jeep, buy another, or just get a new car for all the $$ Im dumping in to it! I said I dunno, Ive always had an addictive personality I get bored as soon as I get back together. Better than sitting in a bar after work drinking away my $$, then going home in a gayarss honda civic. ...But the honda is reliable.. Yea so is my jeep, I just choose to take it apart all the time for no reason.

RE: Rough Country spring height????

Disassembly goes pretty well. I have to rebuild an extra T-90 transmission & D-18 t-box I have, new clutch and rear main seal. I've also discovered my front cross member welds are broken on both ends. I have to schedule a welder to come in. I'm also painting everything.......for the first time. Big clean up starts this weekend as soon as I can find someone to help lift the tub off.

Like where you are, rain and cold temps this month have been a BIG problem. Also, I bike race so trying to keep my training miles up.

I can't wait to drive that thing around again. :wink:

Luckily im in a garage. I too need to train for bike riding, Im doing the Mass MS charity ride in late June. Stuck goin to the gym on stationary bikes for now...

Cant wait til my Jeep is done!!!1
