But maybe you play the lottery because of the chance to win ‘the big one’. So let’s finish off this argument by looking at the big one, the Powerball lottery. Let’s compare the chance of winning $200,000 by spending $3000 on lottery tickets, versus the chance of winning $200,000 by playing American roulette (which is far from your best bet if you are hoping to win money in a casino). Playing the lottery, your chance of winning $200,000 is a little better than 1 in 1200. In American roulette, if you simply bet all of your money on a 2-1 proposition (such as ‘1st 12’) every time until you reach your goal (or, as is more likely, bust), you have an approximately 1.2 in 1200 (i.e., 1 in 1000) chance of getting to around 200,000. In other words, your odds of winning a ‘big prize’ are about 20% better (and that was by playing a silly game in a silly way).

And what about the ‘really really big one’? Well, the payout changes from week to week. This week the real cash value of the payout is around $10 million, and your odds of winning that money are 1 in 146,107,962. You have a better chance of getting 27 heads in a row on a fair coin. It’s trite to say, but your odds of being struck by lighting are far better. (A common estimate is 1 in 600,000, or around 240 times more likely than wining the lottery.)

well I should have known , all the time the lottory has been going on and I've never won. I bought at least 20 tickets over the years and always loose..20 bucks thats like 5 gallons of gas wasted.. Ohh well dirty diapers happen.

Someone has to win, and 2 people did. I'm not a lottery player or a gambler at all, but when the pot gets big I usually buy a ticket just for fun. It almost seems silly not to buy a $1 ticket for a chance at $7 million a year for 20 years or whatever the cash option is (well over 100 mil)

:agree:

That's about the only time I buy a lottery ticket, when it gets really big. Sunshine buys two a week, and I'm ok with that. A few years ago, the guys in my brother's shop down at American Airlines in Tulsa all chipped in to buy like 100 tickets or something when it got up around $200 million dollars. My brother didn't chip in, as he always said,"The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math." Well, one of their tickets hit the jackpot, now he has 20 new co-workers. Poor guy.:(

Yeah, well...

Yeah, but it COULD happen.......after all, people get struck by lightning all the time. It's worth $1 - can't win if ya' don't play - I blow more than that on a lot stupider stuff.

i finally learned how to make armpit farts this year.. a little boy at work taught me (the things we do to get kids to smile) but i'm actually getting pretty good at it now :D

So...where is the sound bytes or a small video of your new found talent?

Thankfully, I can afford to do a lil fishin' here and there without winning the lottery. Dad told me he just bought me a 12 dollar tackle box with a bunch of stuff in it at an auction. So thats almost like winning the lottery, right??? :D

Don't get too close to your computer screen when you read this....I'm sick. I've been running a fever since yesterday morning at about 2am. It's currently 101.4, but was as high as 103.6 yesterday. I worked till 2:30 yesterday afternoon...sorta. After lunch, I slept in my van from 12:30 till 2:00 while one of my crewmembers did the work for me. Finally, one of the other account managers happened to drive by and see me asleep at the wheel and called me on my cell to wake me up. I told him I was ill, so he said he'd cover for me if I wanted to go home.....couldn't pass up that deal! But, I'm going in again this morning...gotta be there at 6:15am to drive two properties to check the lightscaping for bad lights. I'm dyin' here!:(

From what I hear the salmon are in the rivers right now up north here...So it's time to try to stop working as much and hit the rivers. The stealhead are also hitting right now. I know a nice little dam that funnels them down through a 15 foot corridor. Get there early in the day and you're set (although every once in a while you have to call the game wardens to clear out the poachers...that's good entertainment).
