Third tail light conversion of the third kind

'96 XJ here and although I've got a 3rd tail light it only lights up when the brake is applied.

Is there a way to bring that center light up to modern standards and rig it to stay on all the time (when the lights are on) and get bright when the pedal is pushed?

As far as I know they only work with the brake. Besides rewiring you'd have install a different bulb/holder to accept a 2 filament bulb.

mine are only lit when you step on the pedal, also. i believe its normal too as my new trucks and cars are set up that way

Yep What he said.

Three wire socket and bulb. You would need to tap the marker off of a side marker or figure out the blinker marker wire. Then run the brake to the high bright side.

However take note how well you could see out the rear with the light lit right now. It may cut your visibility by lighting the glass or rear area.
