TJ Door Problem...

Stupid question, but figure, hey why not ask...

Anyways. My doors were stolen a few months back. Full hard doors. Had the stolen 1999 doors replaced by 2005 full doors. My doors never quite opened and closed as perfect as they had with the orginal doors. Drivers side opens and closes fine. However, my passanger side is hard to open and close. It was never really a problem until very recently. Out of no where, its hard to open and close. It makes almost a grinding sound when opening it. Doesnt seem to be any of the weather proofing, and the latch seems to be in place when it hits it. I mean, it never opened and closed perfectly, but outta no where it def got worce.

I'm looking at replacing the hinges on the body and door (and hey, why not since the paint is all torn up and it looks to me slightly damaged over time by putting on and taking the doors off all the time). Do you guys think this is where the problem lies? Will replacing all the hinges make the fix?

I guess its something you gotta actually see and look at in person, but just wanted to through it out there...

Thanks!
Rob

the grinding noise comming from the hinge? try some grease there.

the door itself is not rubbing on the opening is it?

oh, yeah..also...my friends jeep had a really bad squeek and grinding...it was the bolts to the hinge backed off a turn and it was gone. maybe?

Im really not sure if its from the hinge... but I cant visually see where else it could be coming from. The door doesnt appear to be rubbing on the body, perhaps on the hinge side (most likely the case).

All the bolts on the hinge are in place...

Is there a consistant gap all the way around where it meets the body? Any paint scraped off the tub or door where they meet?

You can adjust the hinges by loosening the torx bolts, adjust, re-tighten. It may need some touching up of the paint around them afterward.

Thats what I like (??? lol) to hear... as indeed yes, there is a gap all around the door when its closed. Its rather noticeable as well. Thats why I figured it was at the hinges.

Other than that, no, I do not see anywhere on the body where paint has been scraped off the tub or door where they meet...

As for re-adjusting, that sounds like what I thought. No worries on paint chipping and whatnot as I am planning to buy all new hinges all around as the paint is destroyed from taking the doors off all the time (the metal on the hinges seem to be scraped up on that passanger side).

Any other comments?

Thanks guys!

How does it compare to the driver's side? There should be a gap, but it should be consistant all the way around the door.

Adjusting those hinges on my '92 was kind of a pain in the neck. I did it while the door was on and closed, using a wooden wedge to even out the spacing of the door and tub. It took some trial and error but when I was done it was perfect.

The drivers side is nearly perfect. Not enough to worry about and hassle over... looking at the costs for a new hinge... I maybe taking your advice this weekend! lol

Thanks again

Rob

Sorry for the double post...

But got another question for you...

When you re-alighned the doors... from what hinge did you losen in order to align it up correctly? The ones attached to the door? Or the ones attached to the tub? Or both?

Thanks!
Rob

I would say the ones on your door. i wouldn't mess with the ones on the body as they also hold the windshield, at least for me.

Yeah I adjusted the ones on the door. I would definately go that route before buying hinges, unles one is obviously damaged.
