transfer case noise

So I got out of the jeep today..left in running to get somthing from inside the house..i noticed a strange sound comming from the transfer case area. Its sounds like the case is gargling rocks or making a strange noise. I can't put my finger on it, jeep drives perfect, no noises while driving or anything, shifts into hi and lo fine. Tomarrow while its light outside i'ma check its oil..maybe even change it. Any ideas?

If this is happening while idling and not driving, it's likely that it is not your transfer case. All those parts are stationary while idling. It could be your throw-out bearing for your clutch. Does it go away when you push in your clutch pedal?

Maybe the heat shield for the catalytic converter? Thats the sound I have and it is that area of the drive train???

If its an auto then it may not be fully engaging park and is a bad idea to leave running because it may not be there when you get back.

I would also guess throughout bearing. I am having the same kind of problem.

red, its a 5 speed. I started it up to see if it would stop when the clutch was engaged like joopin said. Anyways..i started it..and no noise! T-Case fluid is perfect, no water or metal shavings...Maybe when the jeep heats up from a long drive it starts to make strange noises?

Jps4jeep...What do ya mean the heat shield? Mine sounds like its comming from the transfer case skid area..i'm guessing cause there no moving parts during idle its gotta be the transmission. Who knows. Got no idea!

A catalytic converter will rattle like a can of rocks when it goes bad. Dealer will replace if under 80K/8yrs.

He might say i'm out of warrenty for all my mods...i'll see what he says though...I installed a cat, they might say it caused the problem

So the noise came back....it was during idle..i stepped on the clutch and the noise went away..so whats wrong with my clutch?

Throw out bearing. At least that is what I was told with the same problem. If you are going to replace it you might as well replace the clutch while you have the transmission out.

well..i'm not opening that up. dealership will..and better do it under warrenty!
