Transmission

85 would either be the poor four or that monster, the GM 2.8l Vsicks......so no. What four speed is it? You may be able to get by with a bellhousing change, but I doubt it. The inputs are probably different and I think the output for the Tcase would be the wrong spline.

Likely won't bolt to the 4.0L, what engine was this transmission originally behind?

An AW4 from an '87+ Cherokee with the 4.0L will fit your jeep, but you'll have to do some modification. This transmission uses it's own computer (TCU) so you'll have to wire it to work with your jeeps computer. The AW4 is longer than any Wrangler transmission so you'll need to change the length of both driveshafts, and redrill the transmission tailhousing to clock the transfer case higher. It's likely you'd have to change the transfer case input shaft to match the AW4.

It's a great choice for an overdrive 4spd auto, and has been done in Wranglers many times.
