Welding / Body Mount

I am putting a YJ body on a CJ frame. The rear body mounts on a YJ are 3/4" or so farther out from center than the CJ rear crossmember has them, so the body doesn't line up without one or the other being changed.

Since I am doing this in a 1 car garage, its not real easy for me to work on the underside of the body once I move it in. (Its sitting on my deck under snow right now.) I would like to move the mount location on the rear crossmember. I had an idea that I could cut a rectangle out of the crossmember, with the body mount hole off-center. I could flip it over and weld it back in, and it would be moved over to the other side of center. If I cut it right, I could make it move just the right amount. This would not be too hard for me to do.

The question is, if I do this, would this area be strong enough to carry the load of the body? I don't want to do it if its just going to cave in...

Ideas?

Thanks all.

RE: hilarious mockup pic of my car! photoshopped!

Yes, it will be plenty strong.

That's a pretty inventive way of dealing with the problem......should work fine, but would it be easier to just weld up the old holes and drill new ones?

I think Junkpile made a good point. Unless it is in a spot where new holes can't be drilled on the body.

But as far as your question...If your comfortable with your welds go for it. It will be very strong.

RE: Re: RE: newbie questions

Thanks guys. I would rather just drill new holes, but the mount hole is about 1" diameter and right on the straight edge line of the rear cross member. The edge actually curves out about 3/4" or so to accommodate the body mount spot, so if I were to just drill the hole over a bit, it would be open on one side.

I think I will sit on it for a little longer. Putting the exhaust pipe on tonight I broke one of the studs in the exhaust manifold off, so dealing with that will give me some time to think more about the body mounts.

Thanks.

well let us know if you end up doing it or not. But, You should definatly be alright going that direction.

Just make sure your welds have good penetration and all that obvious stuff, and your good to go.

RE: For the FireFox users that want Lightning Page Loads

ya, I still say that will work just fine.

Even after you've done it and the Jeeps all back together, you can still check it everyonce in a while for any signs of stress. If it ever did cave in there (which I doubt it would), you;d see signs of it well in advance.

not a bad idea... you could always plate against it too if you are not confident with your welds

Well, just an update... I did it. It seems plenty strong and the holes lined up perfectly when I mounted the tub today. Thanks to all for the input!
