yj 4.0 verses tj 4.0

Is it a direct swap to put a 2004 TJ 4.0 inline six to replace one in a YJ? The YJ 4.0 is tired and smoking.Wasn't sure if they were all the same.thks.

The same shortblock, but there are other slight differences. The pulley setup is different, and the YJ fuel rail has a return line whereas the TJ does not. The '04 TJ doesn't have a distributor, the YJ does.

Yeah but that extra 10hp comes from the coil pack ignition doesn't it? So you'd need to find a way to swap that too.

my 97 TJ 4.0 HAS a distributor; yet my 01 XJ 4.0 has the coil pack. as far as having the return line (or not) the worst youd have to do to keep everything compatible there might be an intake swap; use the 94 intake, TB, distributor, computer and you will be good.
