Telltale signs of a bad 8.8?

I just got back from a local junk yard and spotted a mid-90's two door Ford Explorer with a 4.0L. The guy says he'd sell me the rear 8.8 axle for $175, but that sounded pretty low to me. Can anyone tell me any of the outward signs that this might be a bad idea to grab this thing? I'd like to swap out my 35, but I get nervous about a deal that's too good to be true...usually they are.

How many miles are on it? Can you open it up? I would check the gears for chips or unusual wear. Also, you may plan on buying seals, brake parts, and other possible parts that typically wear out. Just my .2

You will be able to see signs of any leaks around the pinion or ends of the axletubes.

If it's not wrecked in the rear, and no obvious leaks, I'd grab it. That price is in line with places around here, anything more is overpriced.

Telltale sign if its bad, if it's coming out of a truck that has that fOrD name on it,haha:bomb::shock::cry::lol::lol:..j.k.
