Heating and Ventilation question....

I have a question regarding the "Air" control knob of my CJ7. Please could anybody tell me which is the difference having the knob pulled out to the first position "Heat" or having the knob completely out in "Vent" position??

I place the question because I am getting crazy trying to figure out which is the difference between "Heat" and "Vent" in the "Air" control. I really don't appreciate differences, if I pull the knob out to the first position, or totally out I get the same cold air if the "Temp" control knob is off, or the same hot air if the "Temp" knob is completelly out...

it is supposed to move a trap door in the heater housing that channels the air either through the heater core or just straight into the cab. it must be broken or have come loose from the little arm that the cable hooks up to on the housing. good luck, john
