i was on my way home tonight and bam. my spline shaft on the transfer case broke of and my drive shaft droped out what can i do can i replace the spline shaft or what need help please.
You can replace the output shaft and tailshaft housing and other components that may have suffered the same faith without having to replace the whole t.case.
do u know what kind of transfer case is in my jeep its a 87 jeep wrangler with a 4.2 l6 and a pungoet transmission is it a np231 it so and where can i buy the parts at thanks
Joe
Look at the round tag attached to the rear half of the case, both the 207 and 231 were using in '87.
Your transfer case can be repaired in the jeep, but may be easier to remove it. It will need a new mainshaft, tailhousing, and tailhousing extension. I have all those parts if you're interested (if it's the 231).
If you were close to St. Louis I'd rebuild it for you, would take about an hour. Could also rebuild it if you wanted to ship it to me.
no abuse led to this i think what happen was the cap on the u joint came out and then the drive shaft feel out. then the drive shaft when crazy and snapped the whole thing. i think and i will check the tag again tomorrow it too cold and dark out here sorry but i will update tomorrow around 12 thanks for your help
F.Y.I.. i just priced an Output shaft from a Dealer,$367.20.. your still going to need the tail shaft housing and other hard parts.. The New T.case (231) is $981.00 plus tax from a Dealer..I think you have a better deal with Bounty_Hunter.
Send me a PM or email at bountyhunter AT sija.org . I'll take care of you, will be a small fraction of dealer cost, even after shipping.
If your jeep has the 5spd, then your 231 has a 21spline short input. You want to look at other Wranglers with either the 4.2L and 5spd, or the 4cyl engine. The transfer case behind your 5spd switched from 21spline to 23spline so a 231 behind a 4.2L could go either way.
You can also get a 231 from a 4cyl XJ or MJ up to '95.
