Weber Carb Help - Runs Too Rich

I have a stock Weber 32/36 on a 258 that continually runs rich. It shows rich on my air/fuel gauge and with a voltmeter (.8 volts). I am on the verge of stumbling with the air fuel mix - in other words, I have leaned it out as far as I can. Sooty tailpipe and black "puffs" on startup. Here are things I KNOW -

I have no vacuum leaks
performed top engine clean
Cleaned/resealed carb
Good choke
I am running between 3 - 3.5 psi on my fuel regulator
New plugs (burning clean)
TFI upgrade/Nutter bypass
No emissions/Cat converter
Timed at 13 BTC@1600
Runs/performs great! (except for poor mileage and running rich)

What else should I look for? Do I need new or different jets? If so, which ones?

Ok bear with me here, it has been forever since I messed mith my carbed Jeep. I would try the regulator at 2.5 psi. Also the timing seems a bit too advanced. Also Webers usually come with a tiny air cleaner, you might if all else fails, try to tune it without one on. Worth a shot??....maybe...........Probably not though.

Now you said this is a STOCK Weber?? As in Stock unmessed with Weber?? Not a Stock Jeep carb?? I am sure this is old news but stock Jeep carbs (not Webers) ALWAYS clogged up the idle jets and caused a rich condition and some stumbling or dieseling after shutting her off. It's easy to see if she has this problem. Fire up your Jeep, take off the air cleaner and look down the throat of the carb. If you see a nice steady stream of fuel then all is well. If you see it dripping, splattering, or acting anything other then smooth then you need to clean the idle jets, and air venturies. Very simple to do. (The secret is welding tip cleaning files.)

Hope something in here helps out.

Like bakedalaskan said I would check the timing. I have most of the upgrade you have. And I forgot which upgrade mentioned it but the timing should be at 8 or 9 BTDC@ 1600. I'm running at 8. I hope this helps. Also in the Weber manual it says if you have to screw out the mixture all the way you probably have to get bigger jets. Hope this helps

Right. I mean a Weber that was installed out of the box - no jet changes or modifications. At 13 BTC I get the strongest vacuum and run without the first "ping". As I get closer to 15 it starts pinging on hard accelerations.

I have to screw my air/fuel mix IN. I really think I need smaller jets. I am investing in a Weber book and hope to solve some questions. As far as the timing goes, I was at 9 BTC before I did the TFI upgrade. Nobody was more surprised than me at the amount of advance I gained - but it's there. At 13 BTC I don't have any ping or rattle, but move a degree or two advanced and it starts to rattle on hard accelerations. At 13 BTC I also get the best vacuum.
I learned a trick on timing that allows you to get close on an engine that you may not have specs for. Get the motor to operating temperature, hook up a vacuum gauge, get the RPMs around 2000, and move the timing to where you are pulling the most vacuum. That is your starting point - where the engine is operating at its best. You may have to advance or retard from there but you will be close. And remember, the further you can advance the timing without predetonation, the more power you have.

(Smaller Jets) I would bet your right. Although I believe there are lots of people running that same carb without a problem out of the box. Have you checked the float level on that thing?? It might be too high. The book will also give you some specs to look at for that too.

This is also completely off memory but I think Webers like being regulated at 2.5psi on Jeeps. One of those tid bits I read and may or may not have remembered right.

Of course I am just able to give you advise over the internet. Your the one that has to get frustrated and work on the pain in the ass and find out after all,.......... IT NEED F%$#ING JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah but that's the love of our Jeeps ya know.

Just remember that Jeep looks good don't beat it too bad. I wish you luck, I understand how carbs can fight ya.
