Hi all, I have a year 2000 cherokee classic, after driving it for a few miles i get a grinding/binding noise coming from the back of the car every time i brake and pull off again. I thought it was the
rear brake sticking but after inspecting the brakes i could not see any signs of sticking or rubbing !! Has anyone got any ideas of what this could be...Many thanks.

Does the vehicle seem like its lunging or jerks at take off? Even if just a little...

Hi, Thanks for your reply. No it does n't jerk, it feels like the brake is sticking then it releases itself within 1 or 2 yards, but i've looked at the brake shoes and drums and there is no sign what so ever of rubbing !! Also it only starts after about 4/5 miles of driving... What did you have in mind ?? Thanks Mervep

Well since you checked the brakes already, there are two possible areas I'd look into next. First, remove the rear differential cover and check for containments in the gear oil. Then check the ring and pinion for wear or sheared off teeth.
Second, if you have an auto trans, could the noise be coming from it? You may be low on fluid or need a fluid change/adjustment.

If it is indeed coming from the rear, I would do as policemonkey has suggested and take off the rear cover, look for chunks of metal in the oil, look at the edges of the gear teeth closely for chipped off teeth. Put your Cherokee in neutral, grab the rearend yoke(the part that bolts to the driveshaft) and see if there is any vertical or horizontal play in it. I suspect a rearend bearing, or axle bearing.

Hi, Thanks very much for the advise...Mervep
